Network Connection for Privately-owned Computers Policy

Personally-owned Computers

Personally-owned computers, which are not the property of the University, can be connected to the campus network in one of the following ways:

  • In the Student Residences, using either wired or wireless connections
  • Via the campus-wide wireless network
  • Via the mobile computing wired network
  • By arrangement, within a Department, provided that Department has been subnetted

In the Student Residences

Personally owned computers that meet the minimum requirements may be connected to the campus network via a wired connection in the River Apartments and in Rye Hall and via a wired network in the Village Apartments. Access to the network is via a VPN connection and a valid username and password are required for authentication.

The following services are available, once a user has connected successfully:

  • Access to the Internet via proxy servers, normally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week excluding maintenance periods
  • POP and webmail access to the University Email Service
  • Access to personal filestore on central servers (X Drive)
  • Ssh to certain on-campus servers

Via the Campus-wide Wireless Network

Personally owned computers may connect to the campus network via the NUI Maynooth wireless network which will be extended throughout the campus during the current academic year. Currently, the wireless network is available in the Village Apartments, in the Hume Building and in the Arts Building.

Via the Mobile Computing wired Network

Personally owned computers that meet the minimum requirements may be connected to the campus network by special arrangement with the Computer Centre, via the wired mobile computing network. Before being connected, the owner must ensure that his/her computer is patched and up to date and with adequate virus and anti-spyware protection. A nominated network point, usually in the owner’s office, will be included in the mobile network and the computer may be connected at that point only.

Access to the network is via a VPN connection and a valid username and password are required for authentication.

The following services are available, once a user has connected successfully:
  • Access to the Internet via proxy servers, normally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week excluding maintenance periods

  • Ssh to certain on-campus servers

Please note:

To take advantages of this setup please use this form to request your connection.

No access to network printers is available using this setup

In a Department, by arrangement

Personally owned computers that meet the minimum requirements may be connected to the campus network in a Department with the agreement of the Department Head, provided that Department is suitably subnetted. Before being connected, the owner must ensure that his/her computer is patched and up to date and with adequate virus and anti-spyware protection.

In this instance, access is by direct connection and not via VPN and the owner will have access to shared Departmental resources and all other available services.

Please note:

This kind of connection is only available in departments with their own technical support staff.
