Data Security Introduction

Each member of staff at NUI Maynooth needs, for administrative purposes, to collect data on staff and students. To comply with the Data Protection Act 1988 and the Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2003 personal data must be collected and used fairly, stored safely and securely and not disclosed to any third party unlawfully.

On these pages you will find information and guidelines on how to achieve this, how to protect your computer and your data. Please re-visit these pages regularly because we will update the information to ensure we provide you with the latest “best practice” guidelines.

No matter what technical or physical controls are put in place, the most important security measure is that everybody working with personal data is aware of their responsibility to keep the data safe.

You can find more detailed information about Data Protection in NUI Maynooth at

and about the Data Protection Act 1988 (Amendment) Act 2003 at
