Computer Assistants (CA) Responsibilities
The Computer Assistants report to the Computer Centre User Support Manager.
The Computer Assistants are responsible for the following areas:
General
- Offer advice and support to the users in the PACR
- Assist User Support staff in various projects
- Attend training sessions given by User Support or provided by the Computer Centre
- Observe and comply with the Health and Safety regulations
- Clean all computer equipment – screens and printers in particular
- Keep PACRs tidy
- Log all faults with PACR advisor or Helpdesk
- Update of diary essential, it can be the only form of communication between some CAs and provides a record of PACR movements
- Print out booking sheets and place in the folders provided
- Check that the correct signs are up for classes and take them down when class is over
- If there is a particular problem with a student that you cannot deal with and you are going to send them on to another CA, please inform that CA by way of the diary or E-Mail, or phone
- Update calendar as needed
Housekeeping
- When paper is delivered, unload all boxes and shelve reams of paper, flatten boxes for recycling
- Keep rooms tidy and safe, align chairs, check stray wires, pickup cans, papers etc
- Throw out empty boxes as used
Administration
- Ensure that the current timetables are displayed and booking forms are kept up to date
- Ensure that all queries that cannot be dealt with are logged in Remedy.
Technical
- First step troubleshooting of computer / computer periphery / printer
- First step troubleshooting of Operating System / Standard Applications
Printing
- Changing of drum/toners/paper
- There is still quite a lot of life left in a toner after 'change toner' message shows, keep an eye on quality of print before changing
- Reset printer after drum change
- Record printer counts each morning and e- mail to PACR advisor
Consumables
- Regularly check printers for paper and error messages
- Regularly check supplies and ordering of same i.e. paper/cards/drums/toners etc
- Check there is enough paper left in press for next shift, if running low please order from reception
Organisation
- Ensure that reserved PACRs are available for the booked class
- Assist lecturers and tutors in classes where appropriate.
Cash-Handling / Vending Machine
- Regularly check the vending machine to see if cards need to be re-stocked
- Regularly check if the vending machine is full of coins, if it is full put the coins into a cash bag and leave it locked inside the vending machine and inform reception (or leave a message if Reception isn’t open). Reception will make sure the cash is collected at the earliest opportunity
- Ensure there is enough change in the cash box
- A notebook will be provided in each cashbox. This is to be filled out if a CA takes money from the cashbox to top up their own card which is used while assisting students
