Recently NUI Maynooth users have been targeted by fraudulent email messages that attempt to trick them into divulging secure information such as their usernames and passwords. These attempts, which are called “phishing”, can look quite genuine, as they appear to come from trusted sources such as the Computer Centre helpdesk. You might be told, for example, that “we are updating our database and e-mail account centre” or that we are “checking the size of inboxes”. You will often be told that if you do not verify your details, your account will be deleted or permanently disabled. Be very wary of any such messages. You should never, under any circumstances, send your username and/or password to anyone via email, no matter how genuine the request appears. The consequences for your own personal information and for the security of the University’s network could be very serious.
If you think that your account has been compromised or if you have given your password to anyone, you should change your password immediately - see
NOTE: This facility cannot be used when you are off-campus.
Please contact helpdesk@nuim.ie, if you have difficulty changing your password yourself.
If we become aware from our logs that you have replied to a phishing attempt then, for security reasons, we will reset your password immediately in accordance with our Login Account Security Policy – see
